WELCOME TO THE
ENGLISH LANGUAGE INSTITUTE!
ENGLISH LANGUAGE INSTITUTE!

Established in 1954, the University of Florida (UF) English Language Institute (ELI) is one of the oldest university intensive English programs in the US. The ELI is accredited through CEA, the Commission on English Language Program Accreditation, and UF is accredited through SACS, the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. The ELI’s primary mission is to prepare international students for study at the graduate or undergraduate level in the US, although professionals who wish to improve their level of English proficiency, as well as others interested in short-term language study, are also

accepted. Graduate students may apply for conditional admission to the University of Florida, where completion of the ELI is accepted in lieu of the TOEFL. ELI students take 23 hours of classes weekly and participate in daily cultural activities, excursions every Saturday, a conversation partner program and a volunteer program. Classes are small, with a maximum of 15 students. The UF ELI provides student life, immigration, and academic advising, assistance in housing, and a 24-hour emergency contact faculty member. You’ll find more information about all of these things in this brochure.

CULTURAL ACTIVITIES
CULTURAL IMMERSION PROGRAM

A very special feature at the ELI is our Cultural Immersion Program (CIP).  The CIP organizes extra-curricular activities and provides daily afternoon and weekend trips. With Florida’s ideal weather, our students enjoy picnics, canoeing, swimming, beaches, Walt Disney World, Universal Studios, Busch Gardens, Kennedy Space Center, and historical St. Augustine. Also, the CIP provides Language Assistants who teach informal American English slang, music, and conversation as part of Listening and Speaking.

All activities are directed by Ms. Tate Quinones, the CIP Coordinator. The CIP is an integral part of the program and focuses on providing opportunities for oral practice outside the classroom.
